This year was the time for a brand new Adriatic Lagoon Regatta with more races and new beautiful places to explore: Jelsa (island of Hvar) and Trpanj (Pelješac peninsula). The fifth Adriatic Lagoon Regatta 2016 opened on 28th April 2016 with a video restrospective of previous regattas and a MARE-MONTI traditional dalmatian dinner with some modern twists at Velum Restaurant next to our marina in Split. The menu featured delicacies such as soparnik, prosciutto and cheese, Wellington steak, roasted duck with red cabbage, nutella cheese cake, strawberry cake, ice cream. The Welcome Party inbetween and after was spiced up with a cigar tasting, D.J. Goran and Luša & Andro on percussions and lead guitar. This evening was just an intro and warm-up for all the dance moves that were about to follow.
After having fun at the dance floor, the adventure continued the next day with 14 catamarans sailing out and all the 120 crew members fresh and alert. The Lagoon Escapade left the marina around 10:30 a.m. and chased the wind in the Brač channel in partly cloudy weather. First warning signal was announced in the early afternoon when the wind picked up and the sky cleared up. We opened the regatta with the new format of racing. The shorter, round the buoy, 'America's Cup style' of race with reaching start proved to be extremely exciting. A second navigational race took us straight to Jelsa in perfect sunny weather. The day was rounded off with a meal of traditional lamb and an after-party at the Artichoke Bar in Jelsa.
With the wind in the back and the sun in our faces we started our next sailing adventure. Wind came with the afternoon and again the first race was a new format of racing and the next took us across the Neretva channel to the small port city Trpanj on the Pelješac peninsula at 14 knots of Westerly. A welcoming comitee consisted of fresh oysters served with lemon and white and rosé wines. Tuna Beach Bar – greeted with prosciutto tasting, tuna à la pašticada, cuttlefish with beans and grilled tuna steaks and all the dishes were accompanied with a marvellous sunset view and/or excellent autochtone wines, for example Dingač from Boutique Winery Vicelić. As the night got colder, the atmosphere continued to heat up through good music on the open air dance floor by Sabioncello band. 9 crews received awards in 3 categories plus the overall winner and a special award (5-kilo prosciutto) for the slowest crew on the newest catamaran – a Lagoon 560 S2 the Pura Vida. A magnificent fireworks celebrated the fifth regatta, Mala's double victory and all the participants. 22 prizes were enlisted in the lottery; gift vouchers for hotels, restaurants, cosmethics, beauty treatments, marine equipment, hydroplane tickets, shoes, weekend on a catamaran, tablet, coffee set etc. Having finished with the „official“ program it was time for some serious Saturday Night Fever moves...
Poor weather on Sunday, 1st May 2016 has not stopped participants to mark Labour's Day but thwarted an extra race on Sunday to Palmižana. Tuna Beach Bar was the assembly point for the feast throughout the day. Thus ended the 5th Adriatic Lagoon Regatta 2016 after four wonderful and fun days with the return of the 14 catamarans to Split.
